Aim of Treatment:
The Follicular Unit Transplant technique is a traditional method of hair transplantation. This method holds a very important place in a hair transplant clinic. It restores hair naturally for a lifetime by moving healthy follicular units from the back of the head to the balding areas usually on the top of the head. The procedure aims to give a head full of healthy hair to the individual.
Benefits:
The benefits of the treatment are given below:
- The entire procedure of extraction is done under a microscope making the roots directly visible
- High chances to get intact grafts that are not damaged
- A huge number of grafts can be obtained from a single strip
- Very beneficial especially for patients with high grades of baldness
- High quality of grafts as there are fat tissues in it which increases the survival rates of these grafts
- The strip of hair is taken from a permanent zone that is not affected by the balding
- The surgery can be carried out without shaving the head completely
- The scar is barely visible after healing
- It improves the confidence and self-esteem of a person
Results:
The finals results of the treatment are visible after 9 to 12 months when the new hair grows into the area being treated. Initially, after a few months, the new small hair that grows falls off. This is a natural process as those hairs are usually weak and also rough. The hair that grows after these fall off, is the real and permanent result of the treatment. Â
Ideal Candidate:
- Somebody who suffers from excessive hair loss
- A person with balding spots or thinning hair
- A person who wishes to restore their original hairline
- A medically fit person who is mentally prepared for the procedure
- Someone with enough hair on the donor region to extract the follicular units
- Males suffering from male pattern baldness
- Anybody who is self-conscious about their looks and wishes to enhance it
How does it Work?
The treatment works by transplanting healthy follicular units extracted from the back of the head into the balding spots on the front of the head. These hair follicles then grow into healthy hair giving the recipient a head full of thick hair.
Preparation:
In the initial consultation, the doctor has a detailed discussion with the patient in which expectations and concerns are discussed. The patient then undergoes a thorough physical examination. In that, the surgeons check the condition of the hair and the scalp along with the overall medical condition of the patient. The medical history is also checked. If the patient is an ideal candidate for the treatment, the preparation for the procedure starts.
It usually includes a list of instructions given by the doctor to the patient to follow. One of the most important instructions is to stop smoking days before the surgery until the surgery site is completely healed. In case any patient is on blood thinners, they are asked to stop for days before the procedure to avoid any bleeding.
Procedure:
First, the surgeon draws the patient’s hairline where the grafts are to be implanted. After that, local anesthesia is used to avoid any discomfort by numbing the scalp before starting the procedure.
Once the scalp is numbed, a strip of hair is taken from the back of the head. This is because usually the back of the head has the most hair and is not affected by the balding process. The surgeon draws a mark and shaves the area from where the strip is to be taken. It is then carefully extracted.
After the strip of hair is taken out, the donor area is stitched using dissolvable or removable sutures.
The strip is then dissected into individual follicular units under a microscope. This is a very important step as many hair follicles are carefully separated under a microscope and examined to make sure they are intact. A single strip can extract about 3000 to 4000 follicular units.
After separating the follicular units, the implantation process starts. Tiny holes are punctured into the balding spots in the recipient area drawn by the surgeon in the first step. In these holes, the follicular units are implanted. The scalp is bandaged and an antibiotic is given.
The method of implantation in both FUT and FUE are the same however the only difference is the way hair follicles are extracted. Â
Aftercare and Recovery:
It’s critical to follow the surgeon’s aftercare instructions in order to achieve effective results.
The applicant is provided a saline spray bottle to apply on their head on a daily basis to intensify follicle recovery, protect the wounds from infections, and avoid scabbing. It is also critical that the patient relax as much as possible in the days after the hair transplant since relaxing helps the wounds heal faster.
Swimming, consuming alcohol, smoking, and high-impact activity should all be avoided since they slow down the healing process. After a few days, the discomfort and swelling that emerged after the therapy goes away.
In 2 to 3 months small hair grows on the treated area. These hairs are usually weak and fall off. However, the hairs that grow after that are the permanent results of the treatment and are much thicker and healthy. These hairs can take up to a year to fully grow back.
Is Hair Regrowth possible in the Donor Area?
The donor area is the one from where the strip of hair is extracted for the follicular units. After the extraction, the area is sutured using dissolvable or removable stitches. This part leaves a scar on the head where the hair does not grow back. The scar is usually not noticeable and is easily covered by the surrounding hair. Â
Is the Scar on the Donor Area Permanent?
The scar on the donor region is permanent however; it is covered in such a way that it is not visible to the naked eye. There are other treatments that a person can go for in order to conceal the scar. Â
Cost:
The average cost of the treatment ranges from AED – to AED -. The actual cost of the procedure depends on the treatment and its complexities. It is determined by the surgeon after a complete analysis of the patient. It also depends on other factors like the doctor’s qualification and experience, the technique used, the level of the clinic, and its location.
How Long do the Results Last?
In the initial months after the treatment, the new hair that grows may fall off. This is normal with the treatment and is nothing to be worried about. The proper growth seen after 9 to 12 months is permanent. These hairs last usually a lifetime. Thus the results of the treatment are permanent.
